Difference Between Migraines and Headaches
Headache disorder is a broad term, which includes various nervous system conditions, which bring about painful symptoms in your head. It consists of both migraine and headaches. Headaches are common, and people do experience them at least once in a lifetime. Following a WHO report, it was found that approximately 50% of adults worldwide experience headache disorders.
Difference between migraine and headache
At times, it is not easy to know the difference between a migraine attack and a headache. Let us find out the basis of distinction.
Defining them
- Headache
It is an unpleasant pain in your head, which may lead to aching and pressure. The pain could be severe or mild and is present on both sides of the head. A few areas where you experience headaches include your forehead, back of the neck, and the temples. It will generally last anytime from half-hour to a whole week.
- Migraine
It is a type of headache, which can lead to pain or other symptoms. If someone has a migraine, they might experience recurring attacks or episodes. Headache is only one of the symptoms of migraine. Typically, a migraine attack can last anytime between a few hours to some days. Though migraine attacks develop only on one side of the head, the pain is experienced on both sides.
Causes

- Clenching the jaw

Symptoms
- Headaches
The symptom of a headache usually involves severe or mild pain in the head. Since migraine is also a type of headache, migraine symptoms might also be experienced during a headache.
- Migraines
Prodrome -A day or two before a migraine attack, you might experience symptoms, such as:
- Constipation
- Yawning frequently
- Mood swings – depression to euphoria
- Neck stiffness
- Food cravings
- Excessive thirst
- Increased urination
Migraine aura
- Vision loss
- Visual phenomena, that is, seeing weird shapes, flashes of light, or bright spots
- Needles and pins sensations in the legs or arms
- Numbness or weakness on one side of the body or face
- Difficulty speaking
- Uncontrollable jerking
- Hearing music or noises
During migraine
- Pain, which pulses or throbs
- Nausea
- Pain on one or both side of the head
- Sensitivity to sound, light, touch, or smell
- Vomiting
After an attack
After the attack, you might feel washed out, confused, and drained for about a day.
